Fire Calls 06-02-2014 to 06-15-2014

The Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 287 incidents during the period of 6-02-14—6-15-2014 bringing the yearly total to 2877 incidents.

Motor Vehicle Accident with Injuries: Engine 7 and Truck 2 were dispatched to the 5600 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard for a two car accident at 8:19 a.m. on 6-02-14.Truck 2’s crew consisting of Captain John Asklar, Firefighters Joe Dimino, and Anthony Presutti used the “Jaws of Life” to extricate 3 persons from one of the vehicles.Four people, including 2 children under the age of 2 were treated for their injuries and transported to local hospitals.

Industrial accident: Some molten metal which fell upon an acetylene tank caused a potential explosive situation at an industrial facility in the 3800 block of Highland Avenue at 11:19 a.m. on 6-05-14. A full assignment from Platoon 2 was sent to the scene to monitor the removal of the tank to the outside , thus mitigating any explosion.

Motor vehicle accident with Injuries: A 81 year old Youngstown woman was extricated from a vehicle that was involved in a two car accident at the intersection of 24th St. and Grand Ave. at 2:16 p.m. on 6-06-14. Platoon 2 crews treated her and another patient for their injuries and they were taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Vehicle Fire: Engine 4 and Truck 1 responded to a vehicle fire in the 1800 block of Whitney Avenue at 3:06 a.m. on 6-07-14. The entire passenger compartment was involved in fire upon the units arrival, and upon extinguishment the damage to the 2004 Mazda was pegged at $4100. The cause is still under investigation.

Structure fire: Platoon 3 was sent to the 2300 block of MacKenna Avenue at 2:51 a.m. on 6-08-14 for a vacant 2 1/2 story house that was fully involved in fire. Additional units had to summoned as the fire was spreading to an adjacent occupied household. All occupants and pets were safely removed. Firefighting efforts were initially impaired by a bad hydrant in front of the fired building and by burning power lines also in front of the house. Damage to the vacant structure was estimated at $20,000, and damage to the occupied structure was also listed at $20,000.

Motor Vehicle Accident with Injuries: Off duty Firefighter Lenin Nowakowski was luckily on the scene to apply a tourniquet to a person who suffered a severe arm injury in a motor vehicle accident in the 6400 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard at 3:08 p.m. on 6-10-14. Arriving crews from Engine 7 and Truck 2 attended to other victims of the accident. Mercy Flight was requested to the scene and transported the serious injured patient to a hospital trauma center in Buffalo.
