October is Fire Prevention Month

October is Fire Prevention Month and October 9–15 is designated as Fire Prevention Week. 80% of fires in the United States occur in the home resulting in an average of 4000 deaths annually. In the U.S., someone dies from in a home fire roughly every 134 minutes. Roughly half of all home fire deaths resulted from fires that were reported between 10:00p.m. and 6:00a.m. But only one-quarter of home fires occur between these hours. Although children five and under make up about 9% of the country’s population, they accounted for 17% of the home fire deaths. With this in mind, the NFFD Fire Prevention Bureau will continue to provide educational information and programs designed to increase the public’s fire safety awareness.
